Description

• The ecstasy of the divine love between Radha and Krishna is portrayed here, as the couple carouse in the forest of Brindavan. Above, a celestial goddess surrounded by her devotees, showers her blessings. Bordering blue Krishna and the fair Radha are the dashavatars or ten reincarnations of Lord Vishnu. Below, the pure white cows look adoringly at the couple and white elephants sway majestically.
• The specially processed and dried palm leaf is first cut into the required size. Artists from Orissa then engrave the palm leaf with a special iron-stylo. After the illustration is engraved, Lamp Black or powdered Coal is applied on the palm leaf. The engraved portion thus gets filled and highlighted in black line illustrations. Vegetable dyes are then used to fill in the illustrations with soft, subdued colors. Care is taken to remove the excess coal black on the palm leaf.
• Each painting contains rows of circles which highlight some of the main illustrations. Circular discs, made out of palm leaf, are stitched over each circle. Each disc contains a 'semi-circular flap' which when lifted upwards forms a set of 2 complete illustrations, and sometimes even mantras, within each circle.
• This is a novel technique used by the artists to depict as many scenes or episodes as possible to illustrate the mythological tale.
